I was a midwife for 10 years, unfortunately I'd say it's quite common. Not the majority, but certainly a large minority.

Why are these women having babies with men they know are losers. No way that behavior manifests for the first time in the birthing room, if you date a loser you can’t expect anything but a loser.

It often does only begin to manifest during pregnancy. Pregnancy is a huge trigger for first-time intimate partner violence.
