USA really impressed me yesterday during the match facing Paraguay; they were fast, energetic and plenty of determination. My guess is we’re going far into the competition! 🇺🇸🇺🇸

u/Ok_Cow8787 3d ago
That is the best any USMNT has looked ever. Dominate, composed, maintained possession, and created tons of chances.

I’ve waited 30+ years for a World Cup win like this. They were so composed, confident and attacked for 90 minutes ⚽️🙏

u/FrameFalse6528 Dos a Cero 3d ago
Whole team was playing lights out, making plays, and hustling. Love to see it! Lfg 🇺🇸!

From an English fella to the Americans - that was really fucking good. A joy to watch.

8 minutes for what?
10
u/Timely_Invite2794 3d ago
extra time
-7
u/xDwaree 3d ago
Why?
1
u/drlsoccer08 3d ago
There will be more stoppage time than normal during this World Cup due to the hydration breaks they’ve added to each half which each last 3 minutes. So it’s the equivalent of more like 5 minutes of stoppage time in a normal tournament. Actually 4 and change because Gio Scored at 97 mins and ~20 seconds and the game ended before the ball was put back in play.
6
u/Domestic_Kraken 3d ago
Because there was 8 minutes (give or take) of time during the 2nd half where the ball was out of play and soccer wasn't being played
1
u/The0verlord- 3d ago
Why not just stop the clock during the ad break?
1
u/DankItchins 3d ago
It's not just the hydration/ad breaks (which aren't typically a thing in soccer except on extraordinarily hot days); it's also times where the ball goes out of play for a corner of goalkick, play stoppages for injured players, etc. As for why they don't stop the clock for all those things... I don't really have a great answer for you besides "that's how soccer does it".
1
u/The0verlord- 3d ago
Huh, that’s interesting. I can see it being more accurate for quick play stoppages like those.
In basketball, for example, you have to have an on site clock operator physically turning on/off the clock every time the ball goes out of bounds or the ref blows the whistle. So the clock can only be as accurate as the operator’s reaction time. This is an interesting solution to that problem

Giovanni's dad is literally a U.S soccer legend , what the fuck are you talking about

A very shrewd bit of analysis, shame you can't work out how to spell, use grammar or how own goals work though :)

What do you mean "former Chelsea fan" you can't just switch teams. What you really are is a glory fan
-15
u/LongRodVaughnDong 4d ago
Why preface this with the fact that you’re European? What does that matter?
6
u/Illustrious-Art-7465 4d ago
Basically stating that they have no dog in the fight, that might still be too complex. They arent from either of the countries in the game and have a relatively unbiased opinion

it’s fine. we can’t hear his silly accent via text. let the guy have an identity
-10

Should I preface every comment I have with my continent of origin? 💀
6
u/goodtimtim 4d ago
if you’re an american posting in the ussoccer sub it’s probably redundant but go ahead. nobody cares.

Really needed this one after Spurs blew a 29 point lead. What a great start to the tournament

Really needed this one after Spurs blew a 29 point lead.
Lads, it's San Antonio.
5
u/hornhighyo44 4d ago
I’m a Knicks fan. So I’m free rolling, but I’m glad that we have common ground with the USMNT.
17
u/DifferentActivity812 4d ago
If Spurs blew a 29 point lead then they deserve to be relegated to the championship

I really gotta question just how young some are, who weren’t around, or how old some are, who have bad memories, in this thread to be saying “this is the best I’ve ever seen from us.”
It was great. Better than I expected.
It’s not above the original Dos a cero or the Spain Confederation Cup matches
1
u/Certain-Researcher72 2d ago
Spain was a series of fortunate bounces coupled with an underdog's desperation scrap. The "result" was arguably better but the play was better in this match. No question whatsoever.
The only performance that was even close was the first half of the 3-2 Portugal match. But even that wasn't a show of flowing dominance across 11 positions for 75% of a match.
6
9
u/brandonouthouse 4d ago
Who cares? Let's just enjoy what we have now and support our team on the biggest stage.
19
u/IndubitablySarcastic 4d ago
Disagree - watching since the early 90s and while they’ve had bigger wins/moments, this is the best complete team play I’ve ever seen from us.
Not overreacting to this game but the attack, ball winning, aggression, and overall technical play was top notch.
6
24
u/wild_and_running 4d ago
Disagree. Having watched since the late 80s, this was the best half of team soccer I’ve seen a US team play. Technically, effort, spirit and pride. I recognize that Paraguay is not a dominant team, but this was an exceptional half of soccer.
1
u/Certain-Researcher72 2d ago
3-2 Portugal was the only thing comparable. And that was for 45' followed by desperation defending
8
u/Hatennaa 4d ago
From purely a standpoint of quality of play, that is the best the US has ever played. I’d never suggest it was as big a moment as either thing OP mentioned, but that was the sort of performance that we knew this generation could show and we’ve had to wait a very long time for it.

u/CryIndependent3949 4d ago
It was a good game for sure but we beat this team earlier with a c team. Beating them 4-1 is expected with a team. Türkiye will be a different story.
1
u/Ok_Dragonfly9104 3d ago
Türkiye is not the team they want us to believe Australia will be our true opponent

Been a hardcore USMNT fan since 1994. Today was fucking magical.

u/Maleficent-Goat-551 4d ago
Cathartic almost. I’ve hated watching the boring ass soccer of the past, play not to lose, counter attack. This is FUCKING great football and I can’t believe it’s finally MY team playing it!!!!!
35
u/BannedBenjaminSr 4d ago
I'm sure this has been said in the 6.4k comments but it's so nice to shit on an inferior opponent in a WC match. What a moment for US soccer and the national team. Very proud rn
12
u/Rivelinooo 4d ago
Are you trolling or clueless? Paraguay beat Brazil and Argentina in their qualifying games and only conceded 10 goals in 18 of their games “inferior” is not a fitting term 😂
1
29
u/TheQuietSleeper023 4d ago
I'm way late on this I know, but this game and definitely the first half is the best I have ever seen the USMNT play. They didn't even let Paraguay into the offensive half hardly, it was an incredible performance. And it's not like Paraguay is the Montserrat national team either.
29
u/mahnli 4d ago
Tears in my eyes at the whistle! I hope this lasts, I've been waiting for this kind of soccer from the USNT!!!!
-17
u/Zestyclose-Being-879 4d ago
Have you seen the women?
0
u/The_Muffin_Stuffer 4d ago
It’s different. The women’s team gets beat by youth academy and youth national teams. Most of those boys don’t become pros either.

u/StationaryNomad 4d ago
The first US team that can’t be described as “plucky.” I’m quietly optimistic.

u/DoitcheHasAGun 4d ago
How much did you end up spending?
I took in a club WC game while in Dallas last summer and with the tickets and the overpriced food it wasnt worth it for that smaller game I didn’t care about
1
u/SilentAce07 4d ago
I could have had it for $110 during the presale but passed on it and then snagged a seat last minute for $220. Honestly was still worth it for this situation considering the world cup doesn't come around often (neither does a performance like that). I'm also in the Dallas area fwiw.

Guys, I don’t wanna get ahead of ourselves after tonight…but we’re winning the World Cup 😬
36
u/PassionNpizza 4d ago
I’ve been a USNT fan my entire life and I can’t remember a performance better than that on the biggest stage. Our first half was glorious attacking soccer and a joy to watch. Dream start for us. Pulisic was golden, Balogun was a sniper, and Dest wreaked havoc on the flanks. I’m also happy that Reyna got some redemption. What a joy that was to watch!

Amazing what a world class coach and a real crowd can do for the players. It was a beautiful combination of work rate and free flowing attacking soccer. Finally!

Tillman and Jedi were everywhere. Pulisic and McKennie out there just trying whatever shit they feel like. Made Paraguay look like minnows. I have never seen the U.S. on the front foot like that at a World Cup. Just awesome.
17
u/External-Fortune-261 4d ago
Yeah totally sooooo techy, Robinson pulling out some Harry Kane dribbles, dest weaving through players. You catch that Paraguayan player crying after the second goal? Total melt down. I been watching the US since 2010 and I could not recognize what I saw today, what a team!

As awesome as this win is, and someone who has watched every USMNT game since 2014, I want to see how we finish the group. That said, this is probably the best we have played in a VERY long time
6
u/chumbubbles 4d ago
Best complete World Cup game they’ve ever played. They looked like Spain or Brazil in their prime. This is not an overstatement.
17
u/Medicmanii 4d ago
Mf'er will you let me enjoy this for a few days.

u/Mental-Key-1618 4d ago
Enjoy it! But tou cant forget how long the road is lol, its literally just one game. Unfortunately with soccer its not so easy to go off of just one match
13
u/SirKacamata 4d ago
I watched all the WCs since 1994 and follow USMNT since 2009, this is by far the best performance US has ever had in a WC.

u/moelsh 4d ago
Zero chemistry between the people on the panel. Lowe, Henry, Ibrahimovic, Lallas
1
u/DeanMo80 3d ago
Yeah, Henry's energy was really weird. Felt like he wanted us to lose or something.

Ugh. So sad to hear that. I am watching on Telemundo. Even though I’m not fluent in Spanish it’s been great. I can’t believe they put Lalas on that shit…. Awful idea.

This has to be the best performance of the US team I’ve ever seen in my 40 years of watching them.

u/timhowardsbeard 4d ago
30 years for me. That was without a doubt the most electric 45 minutes the team has ever played. The atmosphere matters, the personal passion matters and everyone delivered tonight.

Why does Pepi keep getting subbed on instead of Haji?
9
u/highhandedturtle 4d ago
Because i feel sad inside when i have to watch Haji play soccer
0
u/Psychodelonaut 4d ago
I get sad every time I see Pepi touch the ball. The few games I've seen Haji play with Coventry he's been great

u/allij0ne 4d ago
Wow. That first half was the USMNT of my dreams.
6
u/n10w4 4d ago
losing Puli makes a difference but they still did well.
3
5
u/somethingAmos 4d ago
They said that on the broadcast but I think the bigger change was after halftime. Couldn't keep up the same energy in second half after really hard-charging first 45 and having a three-goal lead. But we still had some good chances in the second half.

Just want to take a moment of how proud and happy how the American crowd showed up and supported our team. 👏👏

McKennie and Tillman were absolute animals! The whole team pressing as fast as possible was awesome to watch. We need to keep that energy throughout the tournament. Fans at the next games get LOUD and cheer our team on! USA! Epstein didnt k*ll himself.
