That’s one of the skinniest bears I’ve ever seen, extra scary because homie may be very hungry

They're just awkward looking at that age, that bear is between 1-3. Not much mass, and all lanky. They start to fill out when they're around 5. Probably pushes 300lbs in late summer though.

I live in the northeast deep in the woods, and I’ll regularly see bears on my property, young and old, and they’re never that thin. I’m wondering in a difference in climate is the cause, maybe due to our cold winters the bears tends to be a bit fatter in general

Very possible. Depends what time of year you see them aswell. All black bears look like that very early in spring for a couple weeks lol

I'm pretty sure that video was recorded in a northern state in Mexico, near Monterrey to be more precise. I remember when was posted first time (or a very similar video), and the spanish voice with mexican accent at the end confirmed it for me.

Point is: black bears in that area, on the one hand, are becoming more used to human beings. Not quite domesticated or starting a similar process, but definitely they are more used to approach urban zones looking for food. I read there's a theory some bears are becoming less aggressive because the aggressive ones are hunted, thus no descendants to transmit the instinct to attack humans. Curious ones like the OP have better chances to find food and survive for longer, thus more likely to have cubs. Now, don't get me wrong, those are still wild animals capable of crushing bones and tear flesh, don't fuck around with them.

And that's the other hand: many black bears can be scared away with relatively ease compared to other bears. As others mentioned, if black, fight back. Yeah, that bear is kinda skinny, that's why he approached people, but is unlikely he's attempting to hurt anyone, just looking if there's something loose to chew. The moment someone yells is more likely it will run.

Here's another incident for comparative purpose, same zone in the north of Mexico.

You're right, that was in Monterrey (San Pedro Garza Garcia Chipinque) park. Area is well known for black bears and signs are everywhere warning their presence. No attack to humans have been reported, but they approach visitors and nearby houses looking for food & water. That being said, still a scary situation anyways.

Nah, I think it’s just an adolescent bear, lol. They look scrawny at that age.

I think that’s a sun bear.. they’re pretty small compared to other bears.

Nah sun bears necks are thick af. This is a normal black bear. Also, sun bears are known to be aggressive af.. likely would have ended worse in this videi if it was one

I was going to say, if this was a sun bear, this video would've probably been NSFW.

I'm surprised these people don't have bear spray or an air horn. Especially if they're hiking in bear territory.

What's the protocol on sun bears, fight or lay down?

7

u/vivalatoucan 2d ago

For a sun bear, you’d want to fight. With a moon bear, you’d want to draw a circle around yourself and lay down

Black Bear: Fight back
Brown Bear: Play dead
Polar Bear: Kiss your ass goodbye
Sun Bear: Wear at least SPF 15 and reapply every two hours
Moon Bear: Take one small step
Spectacled Bear: Encourage them to see an optometrist every 12 months
Koala Bear: Get tested for chlamydia

I grew up next to the Smoky mountains and most wild bears look like this. The ones in the zoo get super fat.

Still a juvenile is why, hasn't gotten most of it's body fat yet
