Me too. I struggle with weight and body image to this day. It's heartbreaking going back to my journals and seeing the agonizing I did over how "fat" I was -- and in pictures I was very thin.
Same. I kept few journals...mostly a few pages or so of a journal then start another...and me commenting on my weight and calling myself fat and ugly...I never was. Turns out I had undiagnosed scoliosis. Born 1990, and my mom never let me forget I had a tummy. Still struggle sometimes at the weirdest times or ways, even after working like hell on my image issues for probably 15 years now. I try to stay grounded, make art centering and celebrating diversity in bodies and people to remind myself we come in a beautiful rainbow and many of us are just trying to do our best to get by. "They" really did a number on us, but keep reminding yourself, you are beautiful because you exist. You deserve happiness no matter what you look like, what you weigh, you height, color of your skin, etc. Unfortunately we have to fight for that happiness at this time, but you got this.

To be clear, I'm not diabetic, just fat and struggling with being fat my entire life. I do think diabetics should get priority, however, I also think it's bs to tell an obese person that they have to become diabetic first before they can try a GLP 1. As someone who was a teenager in the 90's, this is absolutely pushed by culture and always will be. Making women frail and weak has always been appealing to hyper masculine leaning culture heads.

Also, mental health issues stem from a myriad of causes and it's not very nice to say they're "romanticizing" self-harm. If a person is hurting themselves, they are in crisis. It doesn't matter if their motivations meet some standard you set.

Eh, maybe, but "social media" has a LOT of folks basically picking at appearances 25/7 and some of them have big enough followings that they're actually influential. Not saying that played a big role here, but it's a thing.
There's rumors that Erivo and Grande specifically got competitive about being the skinniest on the set of Wicked, and I also believe they are / surrounded by people who wouldn't fight that impulse at all.
I also 100% believe that there's a lot of skinny people who are angry that GLP-1 drugs are helping a lot of people lose weight and are now trying to get even skinnier because they've spent years equating low weight with moral superiority.

Fashion/beauty trends in thr last 100 years have been a top-down decision, and some designers and executives in new york basically determined what got seen and pushed to the masses.
Only now with social media, that level of influence is now diluted, and people of multiple body types can get likes, way easier now for every pot to find its lid.
While I think the last part is true, I think what social media has also done is the ability to amplify a few unhappy folks into a mass push.
Let me be frank: A lot of the people doing this dont actually WANT anything specific in terms of body shape. They just want to make other people miserable. They want to feel like they have power and influence by pushing people to quit, to change themselves, to go silent, etc.
An example tangentially realted: A recent game in an existing series was announced, the main character being a female character who was tied to the existing main male character. This female character is modeled after a real actress, though scaled differently as the character is a Norae-style giant (or half giant, I dont recall the specifics of the lore.)
This actress is in many people's opinion quite attractive, and the character in the game has like a attractive, middle aged sort of muscle mommy athletic look.
Will that be everyone's cup of tea? No, but it works for many people and in the reasonable corners the debate is mainly "Is it a good idea to move away from the main character?" And "Ooof, some of these side characters might detract from the main", both perfectly reasonable things to wonder.
But there's a VERY loud, VERY vocal portion of the player base endlessly critiquing the female character for not being surgically perfect with the features of a 20 year old with an expensive skincare routine and perfect makeup. Hell, I saw one literally complaining their FEET were too big and not petite and feminine enough... shes a friggin JOTUN.
its not that these people dont have other characters that fit their wants, they do. Hell they endlessly compare anything below their view of perfect to those characters.
But its not about looking for what they want. Its about bashing anything that isn't what they want becuase they're miserable.
Connecting back to the topic at hand, they do this with celebrities, particularly female celebrities. You got your start as a mid 20's bombshell and now you're aging like fine wine in your late 30's? Don't care. Lose weight. Dress like you did in your 20's. Get buccal fat removed. Etc.
Its not about defining and seeking what they want. Its about forcing anyone who dares to not give then exactly what they want to change. Because, again, a lot of these chuds are miserable, self loathing piles of yak scat.
These celebrities are subject to that vitriol constantly and no matter how beautiful they are, no matter how many people TELL THEM they're beautiful and dont need to change... the hate wins out and they feel compelled to.

Fr and it's depressing as fuck when you get more compliments for being sickly and skinny than healthy and chubby. I lost over 80 lbs over 6 months cause my anxiety stopped me from eating and all my coworkers could say was "wow but your body looks great! You've got that beach bod ready for summer!" when I was nauseous and on the brink of fainting 24/7. Fucking infuriating.

As someone on ozempic - it doesn't make you like this unless you are actively striving for that look and also excessively dieting and excercising on top of using the medication.
It is not really ozemphic. The only thing these kind of meds do is slowing down your digestion and make you feel much less hungry. It does's melt your fat deposits at all. So to get to this horrible look you should actively not eat almost anything....
Yeah, I get a bit tired of seeing that. You'll see comments on here about "ozempic neck" and all of this other stuff that people just pull out of nowhere, repeating something they read. I feel like a lot of people really don't get what Ozempic does. It isn't like a chemical liposuction. This sort of change is well beyond that.
Any medical professional will scream from the rooftops about how many lives GLP-1 has saved. Just in the US alone, the obesity epidemic is killing 300,000 people EVERY YEAR. And guess what, GLP-1 has been the only thing that has come close to putting a (small) dent in that number. It's as close as we've come to a miracle drug.

It's because the "fat people hate" stuff was never about health and always about a superiority complex.
Now that fat people have a method of getting healthier easier, all of a sudden it stops being about health and starts being about how. All of a sudden these people are concerned about the legitimacy of their health, whether they earned the right to be healthier.
And because of that, now the scope of the hate has widened to include everyone who looks not the right kind of skinny.
I hate this because I'm stuck in this body type due to illness and can't fix it and people assume I did the Ozempic or meth route. I hate it. People are so shitty about other people's bodies.
Basically all of these women starred in the new Wicked movies and they all lost loads of weight. It's theorised that either they all took ozempic and/or they all had eating disorders (Even Ariana Grande who is naturally on the thinner side) and the film cast was like a cult of sorts. Especially when you compare them after the films ended they gained weight back again.
At least those three were adults during the film. Judy was a teenager and they even binded her chest to make her look younger and gave her a cocktail of drugs to put her to sleep and keep her energised as well.
The more you learn about how kids were treated by the original studio system, the more you just want to use a Time Machine to give these kids a hug (and then punch each film exec and the kid’s parents). Thank goodness the unions put a stop to this, but it took too long and the adults in the room should have done better.
Reminds me of the story from the set of Home Alone with John Candy and Culkin. John saw Culkin and his father being a bit too harsh, and John went up to him to comfort the kid with a hug. It was a subtle jester to make sure he was doing OK, not many around him at the time wanted to acknowledge this pressure in his life.
It still makes me laugh how he talks about his kids don't realize it's him when they watch Home Alone. He says it with such glee and laughter and it makes me smile. Glad he's doing great now

Yeah, back when it was the person's fault for deciding to keep taking harmful drugs because they were a "bad person," not because they didn't understand the drugs literally rewire the brain to need the drugs. It was a a "moral deficiency" problem back in the day. Fking wankers!
I used to work on an adolescent mental health ward and the ward managers actually had to create a separate ward for the patients with eating disorders because as soon as one was admitted it would spread across the whole ward (and eating disorders are incredibly hard to treat).
I used to work in a group home for teenaged girls. The two things that were a total bitch to deal with were eating disorders and cutting. In both they would spread like wildfire. I didn’t know about the social contagion of self harming when I started. We had a girl come up to a staff member and ask for medical attention because she had sliced her thigh and was bleeding. After the girl left my coworker turned to me and said, “watch. In a week half the girls will be cutting.” She was close…in a week 5 of 8 were doing it. Absolutely insane to watch in real time. Like the flu only much less understood.
As someone who had an ED, being around others with ED can encourage that kind of behavior, because it’s normalized and you pick up little “tricks” by watching others. It’s not surprising.
My thoughts as well. If you watch an interview with them Cynthia has a weird codependency on Ariana, like constantly touching her or playing with her hair. So if Ariana is skipping breakfast you bet she is too, then it turns into keeping up with the other by not eating.
Eating disorders can be very competitive (a family member went through treatment and at times the patients were basically competing with each other) so I feel like they did influence each other.

Anorexia is a competitive eating disorder, if you get a group of ppl with it together they will basically just egg each on and enable each other to harm themselves in that way. That being said the producer likely knew what was happening.
Friend worked in a women's clinic that had women with eating disorders as part of it.
She said people frequently had "friends" in there and at a glance it looks like a positive because they're supporting each other. But the reality is they're helping each other maintain their eat disorder.
Seems like maybe there was some weird version of this going on.
I've lived in a shared flat with two women that had some history of fighting with an eating disorder and in my experience your take makes a lot of sense. I thankfully always felt comfortable in my body, but I can absolutely believe that other women would have been negatively affected by their behaviour.
They had a tendency to notice and comment on how much or how often I ate and what I (or we) ate. Not in a negative way, it felt more like curiosity or a neutral observation or conversation starter. Things like "oh, that's the first meal you eat today, you have to be super hungry, hope I left you enough" or "Was it you or Amy that bought all that chocolate for us? That's so much, we will feaston that for weeks!"
They were definitely not trying to influence me in any way, it felt more like food was just constantly on their mind to the extent they knew better than myself how much and what I ate.
It never bothered me or changed how I ate, but I am sure any women that has insecurities or an unhealthy relationship with food could be negatively influenced by that behaviour.
E.D. sufferer here and yep, food (and weight, exercise, etc) are ALWAYS there in my brain, trying (usually successfully) to be front and center.
I HATE that so many mental health workers I've talked to just want to go on about food when they see me. Being obsessed with food doesn't mean you enjoy thinking about it; it's the opposite - you hate it but you can't stop. And having people talk about that stuff only increases the obsessive thoughts. So yeah, if I was spending all my time with someone similarly obsessed with food/weight, I'm sure we'd just reinforce each other's E.D. thoughts and behaviors and probably spiral pretty bad

I have been following Cynthia Erivo since her Broadway days. After the Color Purple ended she began to really bulk up with weightlifting. She was already working out and really fit on Broadway. She kept a running health diary on her IG. Then things began to change. She was less positive and inspirational. She was under a lot of toxic scrutiny and that negativity became cyclical.
And Ariana grande has a long history of eating disorders including having a pro-ana tumblr account back in the day so it seems like those two may have been a toxic combo together - both struggling with their own issues and exacerbated them in each other.
Ariana is thinner than ever now, and she was already tiny when Wicked started. She posted throwback photos from the casting announcement and she was already emaciated. She looks worse now.

When you're around other women who have ED, you take after them. That's why I started avoiding people who have an active one. As an ex sufferer (I can proudly say at least habitually I'm fine now) it is the only way for me. My ex best friend and her comments and habits greatly impeded my recovery and ever since we stopped talking I kind of don't think about food as opposed to making it a contest who ate less that day...
I wonder if they did that because of the conditions on set of the original Wizard of Oz. I have read in the past that Judy Garland (the original Dorothy) was made to have a diet of coffee and cigarettes in order to stay thin. I think ariana definitely has had a long term eeating disorder and now it's just fashionable to let it show. They're not infectious among stable adults. Don't know how mentally healthy these adults are though
