Ads/Marketing “Your card won’t decline” is the new disgusting marketing tactic on TikTok

Came upon this type of ad multiple times recently and it really is so bleak

I hate that not only are we hyper-consumers, but also so financially illiterate.

This is my thing.

Like, I didn’t go to a private school or anything and my parents basically just told me “don’t spend money you don’t have”…..that was my financial education.
Like, why is having cute clothes worth going into debt for when you can barely pay rent as it is?? Huh???
Why do you need the latest blender when yours works just fine and the thrift stores are full of them???

I just don’t understand

I struggled with depression for many years. Most days were bad but when I got a good day you know what I did? I didn't clean up my apartment, I didn't fix my life. I went for a walk, had a good meal, enjoyed life because I felt like I finally could.

Some people treat money like that, like something they can't control that's good one day and bad the next day without their input. So when they have a good day they enjoy themselves because they don't know when the next good day will come.

Great advice, my parents gave me the same. I had to explain that it’s still worthwhile to get a mortgage though, you can’t just save up for the entire house like they did back in their day lol.

Tiktok is a cancer. It's also pretty much the opposite of what this sub is about.

Good thing Reddit has no echo chambers or consumerism

reddit is a forum type site, while tik tok is a short form video content platform. you are deliberately choosing short, attention grabbing content by being on tik tok. this is a consumerist behavior.

If you have a tik tok account, you are part of the problem. Period. Tik tok keeps track of every single thing within the app. What you view, screenshot, and even how long you “linger” on content. That’s how it makes money, and that’s how it “tailors” your feed to you.

Want to help solve the problem? Get tf off tik tok.

I almost wish I was the kind of person who could wake up in the morning, and look forward to a full day of ripping off the general demographic of desperate suckers.

The people who can do that must sleep like a feather.

I think most of them are also just flawed, desperate people. I agree it's immoral to take advantage of desperate people regardless, but the real root of the problem is the factors causing all of the desperation in the first place

I refuse to give any time or money to ppl who can’t even spell properly. If what theyre saying was so important they’d learn how to spell.

An old quote that's been stuck in my mind for a decade:

If you say "plz" because it's shorter than "please", I will say "no" because it's shorter than "yes".

They can. Spelling mistakes make the ad feel more like a regular person sharing a secret instead of paid product placement.

This is also sold by famous pedophile James Charles, who also spent like five minutes mocking a spirit airlines worker who got laid off. Fun on all sides

I mean she was begging strangers for money, that was not anywhere as offensive as his pedo allegations, bringing them up in the same breath is a little ridiculous

I bring it up because it adds context for the marketing. She was asking for money but all he had to do was ignore it instead of going on like a psycho about how he hates poor people

Every time I see TikTok shop ad that says something is offensively cheap, it is offensively overpriced

8

u/tehCharo 4d ago

"offensively cheap" said no one ever when making a purchase.

This is so predatory

Right? Especially the discount ending in 30mins. Pure evil

Eww. So glad you brought this up.

I just assumed this was from /r/antiMLM when I saw it on my front page.

There's probably more crossover between those two communities than I realized tbh
